News on the ever changing value of our dollar

Question on the minds of many retailers:
With the dollar being at par with the American dollar when will you be lowering your prices, or why haven't you lowered your prices?

Answer:

The dollar is something that changes by the minute sometimes, it is not something you can bank on, unless we could go purchase 100rds of thousands of dollars at a time of us dollars when ever we heard of a change that we liked, but if we did that and then the change was even more, then we would be out of pocket.  So we can't do that, but also there are so many other factors invovled our warehouse doesn't change over with stock being purchased daily.  What that means is the day it was announced that the dollar was at par, did not mean that the goods we currently owned sitting in our warehouse we bought at par. There are so many other costs involved in getting goods into this country to be able to sell imported items other than just  cost of the dollar.
Please see below an excert from a letter we recieved from a manufacturer on Feb 23 2008, giving us the reasons for a 10% increase in their prices to us, then below that read the letter that we received from the same company on October 1 2008.
The letters read:
"Since August 2007, commodity costs, energy costs (including transportation costs), and costs associated with manufacturing have escalated by a substantial and rapid pace.
Corn syrup pricing is up by 20%. Cardboard increased by 6% and bag film is up 8%, plus energy costs are up 10%. Domestic freight costs have increased 5% (exclusive of the continually rising fuel charges)."

Oct 1st we got another letter from the same company with price increase #2 since spring the excert from that letter read:

Since earlier this year, corn syrup is up by 10%. Sugar has been flat but now is rising by 33% in 2009. Transportation costs have escalated by over 50%. Additionally, cardboard increased by 8%, bag film by 15%, dark chocolate is up by 12%, and milk chocolate is up by 10% from earlier this year.

Since February 1 2008 we have been informed of price increases from almost all manufacturers that we deal with some as low as a 10% increase and others as high as 15% increase, and as resently as the end of May some companies over 20% increase, and some have raised prices again in the fall on top of that, others have tripled the amount we have to buy, moving us from a minimum order of 1000 lbs up to a minimum order of 3000 lbs, others minimum orders were a dollar amount and some have raised the minimum by as much as x5 what is was.  So we had to add it up 20% in spring and another 20% in the fall, added freight to us of up to 50%,  to only mention a couple of factors, can we lower our prices or do we need to raise them? Oct 1st another announcement came of an overall price increase on all count goods. And now as of mid October the dollar is trading at around 25 cents on the dollar.  We have seen an increase to us of upward of 60 cents,

With the above information being the reality of the situation in the candy business at the present time, the reality is  we can not lower our prices, we are asking ourselveswhy we are in this business as we are not making any money anymore,   we are just shuffling it around. We have had no choice but to raise  prices in many things, and more will be coming as we get the increases to us, Prices are beginning to have to raise as the dollar is back up there, and we are getting so many price increases and growing rapidly. The current price list reflects many changes, if more changes need to be made we will inform you as that occurs.  Always watch for a current price list. We really needed to raise the prices more than we did, but know the market will have to have a slow increase.  So our margins are at next to nothing, and can only encourage you as the retailer to also take a bit of a cut in margin to not have retail prices through the roof.

     News about discontinued candy:

If you are looking for an item and we do not currently carry it, please request it and we will do our best to look into that item for you. We need to know the correct name of the product and if you know who makes it please tell us that as well.  If it is out of production we can do nothing about that.

Click here: for a list of candy that is no longer being made

Other discontinued items not on that list yet:

McGraws Candy company sold in January 2007and the new owners bankrupted within 9 months.  This is very sad news as this was a top selling item. This item was the old fashion flat strip of three flavoured taffy.  We will watch for if the company trustee's succeed in selling off the company and if someone takes on the task of manufacturing this great item, if so we will inform you, if the old fashion taffy becomes available again. If you want to be informed in the event of this happening, please email us with the subject line being McGraw taffy.  We will inturn put you on a list of who wants to be informed if the Old Fashion taffy ever becomes available again. Many ask if we still have some stock of this item, No we do not have stock of this item. For now we suggest you consider carrying all four flavours of the French chew that is a new but is an old time product that we have brought back, to fill in this gap.

Cinnamon toothpicks. The founder and owner of the Harmon's Cinnamon toothpick company has past away and the family has decided to close the company.  If they decide to start up again we will notify anyone that emails us asking to be put on a list - put in the subject line - Cinnamon Toothpicks

Coming this spring:   Black Jack, Beaman's,  and clove- Nostalgia Gum   is not currently available. This product is only made once in a blue moon.  We have just recieved the news that  The Nostalgia gum needs to be booked now, for spring delivery.  May 15th is the expected date of arrival to us.  So don't miss out book now, by email, as a seperate order from anything else. Do not  not  fax this order please, as we can file the orders for spring if they come in via email..   The goods will be offered as a prepack counter display of 2 boxes of 20 total of  40 packages of each of all three kinds, or as a Floor display of 120 count, or packages of 20 of individual flavours.  We need you to book what you want by immediately. If you want to order please request an order form via email.

The little/mini size of the ferrarra Pan boxes are not available any longer. This line now comes  in a box that is considered the Standard size which is now  the smallest size available  in Boston Baked beans, Lemonheads, Red Hots. Theatre size has Atomic Fire Balls, Boston Baked beans, Lemon heads, Red Hots, and Lemonheads chewy and friends.

Bob's chocolate sticks are no longer being made, we have sold out of this item and can no longer get anymore, we can only suggest that you try the World's Bubble Gum as a replacement product if you aren't already buying this item.

Skittle gum is no longer being made -   we still have a little bit left.

Sweettart ropes are no longer being made. We have no stock left

Nerd sour theatre size is no longer being made. We have no stock left.

Hello Kitty gummy pop and hello kitty 3 in a pk braclets is no longer being made. We have no stock left.

If we have missed reporting something in discontinued items, and you have seen it on the price list in the past but it is no longer on the price list, that is the reason, it is no longer being made, and we are out of stock.

We feel it is important to tell you of the   fact that  far too many candy distributors in Canada whom are offering low low cost  specials are  misrepresenting the product that they are selling. The reason they are  able to offer rediculously low pricing is due to the fact that they buy and sell stale/ old close out goods. Some times the goods may even be stolen goods. We at Old time Confections do not buy any questionable goods of any kind and therefore cannot be expected to compete with those prices being offered on goods that were no cost to someone else.  We would rather pay market value and be selling good merchandize that is not going to be an issue.. The sad part is most of these companies are   not telling  the retailer that the reason for the deal is that the goods are a close out.    Every close out has a story.  Is every story reliable and true is the question?  The Fact is close outs cannot be trusted. Some close out companies advertise that is what they are and when that is the case the customer knows what they are getting.  The crime is not all of these companies are telling the retailer that close outs are what they  specialize in and what they are offering. When this Is the case the retailer is unknowingly selling old  and therefore stale candy and yet the end consumer becomes very aware as soon as they buy something stale, as they try to eat it. They will then think everything in the store is stale. When this happens will that  consumer that bought stale candy complain? Some will complain, and some will just tell 10 or more friends and never come back into the store again.  Selling old stale  candy is probably the number one reason for candy stores struggling along and eventually going out of business. Once the reputation of having old stale product is set in the minds of customers, it is hard if not impossible to win back your customers that had stale old candy from your store.

At Old Time Confections we do not buy close outs.

This means we do not buy old goods that are stale or past code, our goods are fresh, we  also do not buy stolen goods.

Some items we sell have short dates and that is only on the one or two items that even though we have still bought fresh at the time of being made,  yet they only have a short time to be able to be sold. Again that is only one or two of our items, the rest of our line you will have a very long time for selling through.

Cheap pricing on food items is not a deal if the goods are stale. If you see a product that has a market value of over $1.00 and upward of $1.50 being sold for .20 cents you shouldn't  need to be told something is wrong. What we are trying to tell you is if a company offers you pricing that is very low or below market value, your alarm should be going off, both to beware of that product that   they are offering you, and then to beware of them all together  because that likely means most of the goods they sell are close out. So you should  beware of everything they sell.

We at Old Time Confections will never risk illness being caused to a person, due to irresponsible selling of goods that should be in the trash can, and nor should you .
